Eye Bag Removal in Singapore 101 – Why Reduce My ‘’Eyebags’’?

“Dr Wong, please help me get rid of my eyebags!” – A line I hear very often

The most common complaint that triggers my patients to consult me regarding eye bag removal or dark eye circles is actually hearing unwanted comments from their colleagues or friends that they look ‘’really tired and haggard’’, even though they have had a good night’s sleep before! Either that or they themselves noticed the unsightly changes under their eyes in the mirror and feel very bothered by it (I mean, even if we are really tired, we DON’T WANT to LOOK TIRED all the time! Especially to our bosses!). As a result, eye bag removal in Singapore has become a big thing these days.

What are ‘’Eyebags’’ or ‘’Dark Eye Circles’’?

For EYEBAGS, there are the:
1. Real eyebags (these need eye bag surgery by a plastic / facial plastic / oculoplastic surgeon) – the fat has slid out of its usual place (herniated), causing the unsightly bulges below the eyes. This usually includes a small incision on the insides of your lower eyelid and then the surgical removal of unwanted fat below the eyes. Fillers can also be attempted by highly experienced filler doctors but results may only be just around 30-50% improvement. (For some patients who are totally not keen in eyebag surgery, this small improvement is enough for them. You don’t really “remove eye bags per se, but effects of such are reduced”)

2. “Fake” eyebags (actually known as the tear trough- no eye bag removal surgery is needed, needs fillers only, read part I of dark eye circle treatment in Singapore below)

DARK EYE CIRCLE TREATMENT IN SINGAPORE

Dark eye circles can be divided into 2 categories.

1. Loss of volume resulting in a depression called the TEAR TROUGH – this is best treated with low viscosity fillers like Restylane Vital Light, Belotero Soft, Teosyal Redensity II. However, this type of dark eye circle treatment in Singapore is an inexperienced doctor’s death knell, so look for someone with proven track record and before after photos during consultation.

2. Accumulation of venous blood, pigmentation at the dermal layer – best treated with Teosyal Redensity II containing vitamin C and glutathione, or Vitamin C infused monofilament threads.

What happens if fillers are injected poorly under the eyes?

The common side effects of poorly injected fillers (mostly by new, inexperienced aesthetic doctors) under the eyes are listed below, and if it occurs, hyaluronidase is needed to dissolve away the ugly fillers. I rarely use hyaluronidase, but I do keep hyaluronidase to help patients from other doctors who come to me for help to fix the below issues:

1. Tyndall’s Effect – This is the bluish tinge that you can see at where the fillers are injected. This is due to too superficial placement of the wrong filler product, causing a refraction of light in the bluish-green spectrum.

2. “Sausage’’ Bump – Too huge an amount of filler are placed too superficially, resulting in a sausage-shaped bump, causing the tear trough to look worse than before.

The fillers disappear instantly with injection of hyaluronidase, but there is some residual swelling due to the chemical reaction, and it is usually 5-7 days later before I inject fillers for these patients who had poor results from other doctors.

Results?

This treatment is instantly gratifying. Patients are usually overjoyed with an element of shock that the dark eye circles that are making them look so tired can be improved so much after just some injections. It is also one of my most satisfying treatments. You can take a look at my cases below:

What would I expect after the tear trough dermal filler treatment in Singapore?

The aesthetic effect of the dermal filler will be obvious immediately, if injected correctly. There should be an improvement right after filler injection.

There will be some amount of swelling noted immediately and 1 day after treatment. This is normal and due to hyaluronic acid (the filler material) being a strong absorber of water molecules. Therefore, it’s prudent for an experienced doctor to underfill (achieving only 70-80% correction at the first treatment visit)!

Most of the swelling from the dermal filler will have resolved by 2-3 days after the procedure.

Rarely, my patients have bruising (the rare few who are unlucky to get it get small yellowish-greenish ones, which can be covered with concealer). I have noticed that inexperienced doctors have a higher bruising rate, and also a higher chance of causing bad bruising. If it happens, it will last 7-8 days before it resolves.

What if I get asymmetry at some time before the 2 week point?

There’s no need to call the doctor. Sometimes asymmetry will occur because one side is more swollen or bruised. Usually, it will right itself by the time of the review appointment at 2 weeks’ time. If it doesn’t, then it can be checked and treated at the review. There is no point in coming in early for treatment of asymmetry as there is often swelling associated and so the final result cannot be seen until at least 2 weeks. Treating asymmetry too early could lead to further asymmetry. The other thing to remember is that most patients have asymmetrical tear troughs to start with. We usually try to address this during the treatment.

How long will the treatment last?

The answer to this varies from patient to patient. It usually lasts between 6-9 months. ( Smoking, late nights, regular hot saunas make the fillers last shorter.)

How much does Tear Trough Fillers cost in Singapore?

Tear Trough fillers are charged by the syringe and costs between $600-$1200 per syringe, depending on the brand and types used. Teosyal ReDensity II are usually in the higher range as they are a product with Vitamin C and Glutathione (pigment-lightening ingredients) contained in the Hyaluronic Acid Gel. Other suitable products are Restylane Vital or Vital Light, Belotero Soft or Balance. I don’t recommend getting Juvederm at the undereyes due to excessive swelling.

Vitamin C-infused mono-filament threads cost $800-$1000 per treatment. The Vitamin C lightens the dark eye circles while the threads tighten and firm up the skin and tissue at the undereyes. The threads also stimulate collagen-production and thus this treatment is also very popular for real dark eye circle pigments, especially in Singapore.
